Sight Savers International Community Eye Project

SightSavers International Eye Project | Integrated Tribal Development Programme | Model Tribal Village | French Med School Group | HIV Awareness Programme | Self Help Groups

The Community Eye Health Project began in March 2005 in Gudalur with support from Sight Savers International (Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind). The project covers the entire block of Gudalur – with a population of 2.23 lakhs (according to the 2001 census).

The main aim of the project is to provide complete and fully-fledged eye care to the local people by providing comprehensive eye check up’s, rehabilitation and educational services.

Our long term objective is to bring about a comprehensive eye health programme in the Gudalur block of the Nilgiris. Our project already covers a wide range of activities from awareness creation, capacity building, training for various stakeholders, community eye screenings, preventive and curative measures, community based rehabilitation for visually impaired people and establishing linkages with the mainstream public.

Broader Goals

No one should be needlessly blind in the project area and those who are irreversible blind should have access to the services they need to enable them to take an active role in society.

Project Sustainability

The eye care service provides an excellent entry point to build the confidence and credibility of the eye care project in the area.

It has lead to the formation of the Two Taluk Level Eye Care committees, one at Gudalur and the other at Pandalur.

Each community screening camp has been conducted with the active support of local organisations like the Panchayat Unions, self help groups members, youth clubs, and consumer protection councils. Hence the service delivery of eye care support will continue long after the end of the project through these newly formed groups.
