About CTRD Trust
The Centre for Tribals and Rural Development Trust (CTRD Trust) is a voluntary organisation registered under the Indian Trust Act in the state of Tamil Nadu. It currently works on projects and programmes aimed at promoting and strengthening the livelihood, welfare and development of the poor tribal and rural communities in the Gudalur Block of the Nilgiri Hills. This involves organising them, enhancing their capabilities, introducing new ways of improving their income and linking them to banks, markets and other health, welfare and economic services. Experienced professional teams based in the field use their skills and knowledge to remove poverty by working directly with these communities.
CTRD is now in its twentieth year of service among the socially and economically marginalised communities of the Nilgiri Hills with efforts being made to better integrate them into the political and social fabric of the area.
When CTRD started in the area the socio-economic conditions of the tribal communities in the Gudalur Block were extremely deplorable. There are several reasons which have caused their miserable life. At the time of CTRD’s conception their earnings were very low. Most of the tribal families didn’t have permanent work and would work as seasonal labourers in the tea, coffee and banana gardens. They were also involved in the cutting of trees for fuel and selling it for a very meagre price. The tribal families in the Gudalur block are often in an acute state of poverty with many communities not even getting one decent meal a day or having the proper clothes to protect themselves from the rain and cold.
CTRD assists the tribal communities by providing them with basic amenities while helping them establish comfortable sustainable living conditions. Mr. RS. Ranganathen along with some local tribal leaders established the Centre for Tribals and Rural Development Trust (CTRD) in the year 1988 in order to work towards the objective of raising their socio-economic conditions and helping them overcome the grip of poverty and ignorance.
